[X2Go-User] It might be that we already have KDE5/Plasma support ...

Hi $LIST,

According to Mike#1, who currently attends DebConf in Montreal,
Debian 9 + X2Go Stable + KDE5/Plasma have been shown to work together.
This is a single report so far, though.

If anyone is willing and able to test and confirm this, it would be
highly appreciated.

Another test result we'd be interested in would be what happens if you
use Arctica NX-Libs and X2Go Heuler instead of X2Go Stable.

Kind Regards,
Stefan Baur

I have the nightly builds not the stable but I can confirm that it works
with KDE5/Plasma on Debian as I just tried it reading this. At first I got
black screen and I thought nope same old same old, but it was just KDE is much
slower to start than Mate. Once it did start it worked fine.

I just tried on fedora f26 and kde did seem to work, other than being
extremely slow to start, and issuing a few warning messages (which I don't
know if they are x2go-related)

I already reported (back in January 2017) that KDE5/Plasma apps
"mostly" work with the stable releases of X2Go when run as single
applications. By "mostly" I mean that repainting tends to be very
slow. Even applications that draw only text (such as Konsole and
KWrite) are far too slow to use comfortably. Even running them over a
raw SSH connection is faster! By contrast, GTK+ applications are nice
and fast.

Another problem with running KDE applications remotely is that many
toolbar icons don't get drawn (being replaced with text labels), though
this problem isn't unique to X2Go; it also occurs with vanilla SSH.

The situation is the same today.

Regards,
Tristan

I'm curious as to what other people are seeing with this these days. With
Fedora 28 plasma-desktop-5.13.4-1.fc28.x86_64 I'm still seeing plasma shell
and other apps crash trying to initialize GLX.

KDE5/Plasma has been working fine over X2go for me. Only issue I've had
is that on some machines the session terminate is not working, it just restarts
the session.

I've been using opensuse 15 with kde 5. I had some problems with the KDE
desktop at first, but it seems to work fine now.

Occasionally I get a weird issue where firefox won't render anything, just
a blank page. I have a bug in with mozilla, but I can't replicate it
although it's happened 2 or 3 times, working fine on a local session, but
not via x2go until I downgrade.

Well, with Fedora 28, KDE is just a back screen, no plasma-theme
is available in the repositories and that is what I previously was using.

Also previously working, now broken, is gnome. No gnome-flashbck or
gnome-session-flashback in the repositories.

What is still working is LXQT and Mate.

[X2Go-User] It might be that we already have KDE5/Plasma support ...
Are you specifying any OPENGL rendering options or similar? Or just stock config?

KDE5/Plasma has been working fine over X2go for me. Only issue I've had
is that on some machines the session terminate is not working, it just
restarts the session.

[X2Go-User] It might be that we already have KDE5/Plasma support ...
Post by Stefan Baur
Hi $LIST,
According to Mike#1, who currently attends DebConf in Montreal,
Debian 9 + X2Go Stable + KDE5/Plasma have been shown to work together.
This is a single report so far, though.
If anyone is willing and able to test and confirm this, it would be
highly appreciated.
Another test result we'd be interested in would be what happens if you
use Arctica NX-Libs and X2Go Heuler instead of X2Go Stable.
I'm curious as to what other people are seeing with this these days.
With Fedora 28 plasma-desktop-5.13.4-1.fc28.x86_64 I'm still seeing
plasma shell and other apps crash trying to initialize GLX.
Just tried on fedora 28. I get a black screen with messages about krunner
crashed.

Well, with Fedora 28, KDE is just a back screen
Same here, too. Seeing it on Debian testing and (!) on Debian stretch, too.

On Debian stretch, things used to work well with X2Go + KDE5.
Regarding Debian's conservative release policy, this smells like we
changed something in X2Go, maybe, too.

Although, this doesn't explain, why KDE5 from Fedora 27 was working ok
for Robert.

There's snapshot.debian.org and we have timestamped stable and heuler
repos, too. So if anyone wants to take a closer look at when it broke
again, after "almost" working on Debian, this might help - pick a
timestamp where you believe it was working to install a basic Debian
system with X2GoServer, then step forward day by day and check which
packages got updated.

Kind Regards,
